9 BX Shootings, 14 Victims, 2 Dead Teenagers

Posted by Lejin - August 9th, 2010

A 19-year-old man holding a party in his Bronx apartment was fatally shot and three other teenagers were wounded by gunfire there early Saturday, officials said.

Investigators said they believed several shots were fired by one or more people from near the doorway into the sixth-floor apartment at 1454 Grand Concourse, in the Morrisania neighborhood.

The shooting was one of several across the city overnight Saturday, according to the police. In all, they said, 20 people were wounded by gunfire between late Friday night and early Saturday morning.

Fourteen of the victims were wounded in nine separate shootings in the Bronx, the borough president, Rubén Díaz Jr., said in a statement. Mr. Díaz called the violence "extremely alarming."

Bronx residents, he said, "want to do nothing more than work, raise their families and live their lives in peace without having to worry that they or their children will be cut down by a thug's bullet."

One law enforcement official said the shooting on the Grand Concourse began after someone answered a knock at the door of Apartment 6-E.

When it was over about 2:45 a.m., the 19-year-old, Demetrius Jones, who suffered a bullet wound to the back, was dead, the police said.

An 18-year-old man, who was also shot in the back, was taken to Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center, where he was listed in stable condition, the police said. An 18-year-old woman was wounded in the right arm and taken to Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center, and a 16-year-old girl was grazed in the left elbow and taken to St. Barnabas Hospital. Both were in stable condition, the police said.

Detectives from the 44th Precinct were still investigating. The police said they did not know what had led to the shooting, although it appeared that the people inside the apartment had been singled out.

Friends and relatives of Mr. Jones's declined to comment on Saturday. Neighbors described a chaotic scene after the shooting.

One man, Michael Melvin, 47, said he heard a barrage of shots and ran upstairs to find Mr. Jones, who was known as Ali, on his back inside the apartment. Thirty to 40 people, he said, were running in all directions.

"There was blood all over the bedroom," said Mr. Melvin, who had lent speakers to Mr. Jones for the party. "Everybody just scattered."

Others said they heard gunshots followed by yelling and the sounds of people running down the stairwell, which was smeared with blood and strewn with liquor bottles, cigars and medical gloves on Saturday.

Another man said he looked out his window and saw a young man carrying one of the victims to the Grand Concourse, where they had trouble getting a livery cab to stop for them.

A second fatal shooting in the Bronx occurred about a half-hour after the first and just a short distance away.

In that case Linezo's homeboy, Alexis Abrueu, 16, was shot in the back outside of his apartment building at 1160 Cromwell Avenue, the police said.

He was taken to Lincoln medical center, where he was pronounced dead.

No arrests had been made by Saturday afternoon. The police said the boy had apparently been at home before he was killed and may have gone outside after receiving a phone call.

The police said there was nothing to indicate that the killing was connected to the shooting at the party on the Grand Concourse.

A crowd of young people gathered on the sidewalk in front of Alexis's home on Saturday. "Everybody loved Alexis," said Juan Rivera, 18. "He was cool with everybody."

Inside the apartment, where the boy lived with his mother and two sisters, an aunt, Ketsia Delarosa, said: "He's a kid that unfortunately had to live in a neighborhood like this. That's his crime."
